Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: update on Sampson and question on Diazoxide
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Last night I recalled another option. It doesn't
help at all with the problem that steroids can
reduce the ability to combat infection, but it
can be useful for ferrets who need steroids but
have ulcers. That option is injectable Pred or
Dex.
Yes, we've had some who were very helped
by Diazoxide and some not helped by it at all,
so what we took to doing was to have a small
amount compounded for testing. We've noticed
that it can take something like 2 weeks to see
if the Diazoxide is really going to make a difference
though some respond more rapidly.
There also had been a request from the
parents of a child with hypoglycemia that
diazoxide not be used for pets since in some
places people had been having trouble finding
diazoxide, but when I asked at a compounding
pharmacy they told me that they never had
difficulty getting it so they wondered if the
problem the parents were facing was more of
a distribution one, and also mentioned that
standard pharmacies, especially chains, can at
times be less likely to order a rarely used drug
than private, accredited compounding pharmacies.
So, I don't know what the actual situation is on
that regard, though I certainly feel for all on each
side. The family is in Hawaii and some compounding
pharmacies in California were a possibility the
last time I heard anything about their sweet, little
daughter. Just figured people might want an
update though the situation is not resolved as
to why some could (can?) not get this med readily...
