Subject: [ferrethealth] Extreme Weight Gain in Female Ferret?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a (nearly) 4-year-old female ferret, Chewie, who has always been ver=
y small weighing in at just over a pound on each vet visit.=A0 Recently, I'=
d say within the past two or three months she has gained, what I would cons=
ider, an extreme amount of weight and now tops the scales at about 3 pounds=
..=A0 While she is still mobile and will come out of her cage at playtime, =
she does not play or interact with my other 5 ferrets as she used to.=A0 In=
stead, she will walk around for a little while, maybe 10-20 minutes, long e=
nough to check things outand will then crawl into a bed and sleep again.=A0=
She will go up=A0and down stairs on her own, but slowly.=A0

I have always fed my ferrets a diet of the 8-in-1 Ultimate.=A0 I did add so=
me Totally Ferret Active and Chicken Soup for the Kitten Lover's Soul into =
their diet for a period of maybe 4 months but have recently switched back t=
o just the Ultimate.=A0 I had suspected the change in food to be the cause =
of weight gain but I just wanted to check and see if anyone else has seen t=
his and what else it could mean?=A0 I usually see stories of extreme weight=
LOSS not weight gain.=A0=A0Could the weight gain be the result of an under=
lying condition such as=A0Adrenal Disease, Insulinoma, a tumor, etc?=A0 How=
do I get my sweet girl to lose the weight?=A0 Any advice or help that can =
be provided will be greatly appreciated.=A0 Thanks.
