Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Extreme Weight Gain in Female Ferret?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had a male ferret who put on a lot of weight, to the point of
obesity and belly dragging on the ground, at the beginning of
developing irritable bowel disorder (IBD). I was told by a couple of
vets that while it's more typical for ferrets to lose weight when they
develop this disease, it's not unknown for them to put on a lot of
weight instead at the onset of the disease. Possibly the discomfort
in the digestive system triggers a desire to eat, and then overeating
occurs. If your ferret is producing poor quality/very smelly stools
or does any tooth grinding, IBD might be something to look into.
Perhaps the change in food could have brought it on. Probably a long
shot, but I thought I'd mention it.
