Subject: [ferrethealth] A Spinoff from - Adrenal Disease Treatment
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a question particular to my ferrets regarding adrenal disease
treatment.
My two boys have been diagnosed adrenal. Mateo showed absoutely no
signs and had a beautiful, full coat. However the dr. said he was
anemic and also had slight renal failure from the adrenal disease.
And then there is Lucas, who showed definite signs of being adrenal,
which is why we went to the vet in the first place. He had lost part
of his undercoat and had taken a pear shape. They got a melatonin
implant in August and they've had so far 2 Lucrin shots. The dr. told
me that I should see definite improvement in 2-3 months of treatment.
Their 3rd. shot is due in October 9th.
Now what has me puzzled - yesterday I was holding Mateo and caressing
his fur. I was left with fists of hair. He lost all the hair on the
right side at once! Also his hair at the base of the tail. And Lucas
seems to have lost more hair, you can now see his skin (before, you
had to spread the guard hairs to see that he had lost his undercoat).
My question is: is this normal? Maybe they will loose it all and then
regrow it? Are they getting worse (my big fear)???
So far they seemed to be doing better, Mateo gained weight (he was a
little skinny) and Lucas lost some of the pear-shapedness.
Mateo is also taking iron drops for the anemia, and they are also
taking levothyroxine sodium because my vet says adrenal ferrets have
low T4 hormone.
I called the vet today about this and he says they may need to get
the melatonin implant every 3 months instead of every 4 months, and
to let him know if I see them straining when they pee (no problem
with peeing so far).
Sorry this is long, I wanted to put all the info I could. I'd
appreciate any comments.

Many thanks in advance,

Alicia and The Precious - Matilda, Mateo and Lucas
