Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Extreme Weight Gain in Female Ferret?
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

My Mayhem passed away a long time ago I was just saying that a huge weight gain could be cardiomyopathy. Yes, he did have a moderately enlarged spleen as was indicated by his xray but not dangerously so. His big problem was the amount of fluid weight he was carrying. His drugs allowed him to maintain a reasonable quality of life....but once the weight of the fluids became too high and his drugs were no longer giving him relief my vet and I decided to let him go. Yes, an enlarged spleen could contribute to a weight gain in this person's female ferret but usually if it's that large you can see it, feel it and it definitely shows up on xrays.

>Hi Heather, You dont mention where the weight gain is... is it all over, or just in her belly area? If it is just in her belly area, and she is having trouble getting around, she needs to see a vet ASAP. That usually indicates the spleen, and it could become so enlarged that it rupture, which means death. I'm not sure if you know this, or if this is even what it is, but if it is her spleen, I just wanted to make sure to mention this. Enlarged spleens can happen *so* quickly.
