To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello Alicia,
First things first. STOP the levothyroxine! No, adrenal
ferrets do not have a problem with a low thyroid. They have
a problem with their adrenal glands overproducing the sex
hormones and androgens. A thyroid supplement is not
needed, and it may be dangerous to use by causing
hyperthyroidism.
Yes, sometimes with Leuprolide (i.e. Lupron, Lucrin, or Prostap)
and/or melatonin they will shed their current coat then grow a new
coat. This sounds like what you are describing.
I would continue using the liquid iron supplement, but please stop
the thyroid supplement!
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
PS what country are you in?
You may be able to use the Suprelorin implants with your ferrets.
