Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Infected incision

Dr Sue, other FHL veterinary members, and knowledgeable ferret people,
My ferret had a similar reaction with Lurpon in May. When I say similar, I
mean a reaction that was not allergic persay, but a reaction by the body. He
had several HUGE lumps form on the scruff of his neck just after receiving
his 4month Depot from United Arts Pharmacy. This was his first Lupron
injection.
I know ferrets often have a lump reaction, however these were HUGE and more
than one (3 total), oddly shaped, and could be viewed from across the room.
He also had a small inflamed gastric lymph node at approximately the same
time, but that quickly disappeared. The lumps on the scruff of the neck have
now totally gone away. It took until the middle of September to do so.
My question is: My vet is very concerned about using Lurpon again. He is
worried about the reaction being fatal. He is rec. surgery. However, my
ferret has already had surgery and has only a right gland left, and despite the
lumps, he responded WONDERFULLY to the Lurpon. Better than I have ever seen.
I would like to continue to use it for him, as it seems to be the choice
w/less risk.
I wanted to get your opinion on using Lurpon again. He is due in Oct and I
am getting very nervous. My vet plans to treat w/pred several days prior and
after to reduce any inflammation, and we plan to give the injection in a new
spot.
In your opinion, or the other vets opinions, do you feel it is ok to
continue Lurpon treatment with him. He is a male, and therefore needs to be treated.
Thank you for any advice you can offer,
Judy
