Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: seeking advice on surrender coming in with probable coccidia
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am getting a surrender coming in this weekend with probable
coccidia. I know this is highly contagious and need advice on how to
deal with this.

Fortunately it was my vet's clinic who initially treated this little
guy. He was only 4 months old and was bleeding from the rectum and
severely prolapsed. They did emergency surgery on him and repaired
the prolapse. Fecals were sent off and proliferative bowel disease
(PBD) caused by the bacteria Desulfovibrio sp. was confirmed but not
coccidia.

He was put on chloramphenicol (50mg/mL) at 0.2mL every 12 hours for 7
day for the PBD. However, it was a time, last October when a batch of
kits at the local pet store were showing up with coccidia and he came
from the same pet store. The owner never brought him back for
follow-up fecals. It is now a year later and he has contacted me to
surrender him.

I spoke to the clinic and we agreed that he needs to be treated for
probable coccidia. In the interim I have 13 ferrets (8 of my own, and
5 fosters). Suggestions in how to deal with this ferret so that the
others don't become infected would be appreciated. I can put him in a
separate cage in another room and wash my hands after handling him.
Any other suggestions?

I haven't seen him yet so don't know what shape he is in yet. I am
hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Thank you!

Tressie
