Subject: [ferrethealth] What else can cause black stools?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My Lucas is very sick. Past Friday he started to throw up and grind his
teeth. He would also scrub his face against the floor quite forcefully.
I thought he had an ulcer, so I gave him sucralfate, called the vet and
he said to give him baby food and ranitidine drops as well. Monday he
was not better, so I took him in. He spent two nights at the vet
because his temp was very low when we got there. While at the vet he
didn't produce any black stools. A blood test was run and the vet told
me that Lucas has hepatic and renal failure, that urea values are very
high. He suspects lymphoma so a fine needle aspiration of the spleen
was made, the results will be back next Monday. In the meantime I have
Lucas home with me, I am syringe-feeding him every 4 hrs. a soup of
Science Hill's k/d with water. He seems to be doing slightly better,
but his stools are very dark. I again called the vet and he asked me to
put some oxigenated water on the stools and tell him if they bubble.
They don't, so the vet told me that means its not blood, so I have no
idea what's going on. I have to take a sample to the vet so that he can
try to figure out what's wrong.
Does anyone know what else can cause very dark stools?

Many thanks in advance.
