Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: ZD allergy food/diarrhea question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

If this is a food allergy, you may want to start on prednisolone just
to help control the inflammation while you try to work out a good
diet. I had a very similar problem with my ferret, which took me
almost two years to work out. Here is her story. Please keep in mind I
mention I lot of diet changes, all which were done gradually to not
stress her system.

Chronic runny, mucousy diarrhea, or bird seed stool. Lost weight. Was
being fed Innova Evo. Considered a chicken allergy as she had vommited
twice about two hourse after eating chicken based treats (ruled out
obstruction first). Did not want to confirm IBS or EGE thru biopsy.
Opted to treat with prednisolone instead and switch diet. Started on
0.5 cc prednisolone liquid twice a day (was receiving 1 mg of pred a
day, 0.5 in the am and 0.5 on the pm) day mixed with gerber turkey
baby food (1.5-2 tbsp). Free fed Z/D. No luck with stool getting
better. Still seedy, though less mucousy and runny. Started adding in
Dr. Wysong's dream treats in beef (freeze dried beef patties) and
Archetypal-1 Ferret where I picked out the chicken pieces
(http://www.wysong.net/page/WOTTPWS/CTGY/FERR). Still no luck.
Switched out Z/D with totally ferret turkey and venison. Things
started looking up, but having the chicken in the ferret archetypal
was a pain. Started offering Nature's Advantage freeze dried beef
nibblets (http://www.naturesadv.com/). She loved those! Once the
chicken was COMPLETELY removed from her diet, her stool was looking
normal. I then decided to cut out the kibble all together because of
all the grains in it. She now is fed freeze dried beef steak pieces
and freeze dried beef nibblets. Her stool is GREAT. I have been able
to ween down her pred to 0.5 cc every other day in the am only. She
still has a blow up every once in a great while, but otherwise is
great. Her coat is BEAUTIFUL and thick (it was pretty thin while on
that high dose of pred). Her energy is great. She is a happy little girl.

While each case is unique, I hope my girl's story will help you a bit.
