Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Update on Lucas
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Our vet visit last Thursday.

I want to start this by saying I now REALLY admire all the people who
run shelters. My toddler son got sick with a pretty bad cough and is
on 4 different meds. And Lucas is on 5 meds also, plus the hand
feeding, so I'm spending all day giving meds and taking care of a
little one. I don't know how shelter folks do it with so many fuzzies
needing care at once. I have strictly forbidden Matilda and Mateo
from getting sick or anything right now =P.

Thursday I was pretty desperate at the vet. Lucas was not getting any
better, and just not knowing what is really going on with him was
starting to drive me crazy. I asked the vet if perhaps his
renal/hepatic failure was getting too bad. I showed him the ulcer on
the roof of Lucas's mouth. After checking Lucas, the vet told me that
he was starting to think that Lucas had an allergic reaction to
something in my house, since when Lucas stayed at the vet's he got
better, and at my house he got worse. I must admit I was skeptic of
this. I clean with a vinegar/water solution. I have my own allergy
issues (eczema) so I try to keep allergens in my home at bay. We have
no carpets, I got rid of our down comforter. We were sent home with a
new med for Lucas, Benadryl. If he didn't get better by Monday, I
would take him back to the vet to spend 3 days or so, for
observation.
Well, I am very happy to report that Lucas is doing much better. I
still hand feed him, but he's eating twice as much. The ulcer on top
of his mouth has almost healed. Now I'm just so puzzled because I
really have no idea what can he be allergic to, and so suddenly. I
had some airwick plugins, I got rid of them. That's all I can think
of so far. I'm still looking. I hope Lucas keeps getting better. =)
