Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Adrenal treatment, Deslorelin
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I haven't been following the group for a long time, i'm sorry about that,
too much work and abandoned ferrets. But I would like to talk about the
possibility of the deslorin implant again. Looking for old discussions about
this theme I saw that practically only one ferret: Sugar, is being treated
in this way. This ferret (0f Tony) is living in the UK. Then I found this
message in which someone of you says: that deslorelin is a drug not yet
licensed in the US. I'm amazed that the US apparently don't allow this drug
to be used, I always have the idea that the US is further ahead in the
research about ferret's health.

I've been following the results of the deslorelin implants in Holland, where
they discovered the good results of this drug, either in preventing adrenal
disease by not spaying the ferret, either in fighting the adrenal disease
itself. I'm dutch but live in Italy and my vet has studied the research of
Dr. Schoemaker and next week two of my ferrets will get the implant to fight
the adrenal disease. Ulisse is a spayed male ferret of 5 years old and he
had his left adrenal removed. The symptoms ( bloody and crusty tail) have
not disappeared though. If I had known about the implant before I would have
avoided the operation. My other ferret is also male, spayed of 6 years old
and his echo showed an enlarged adrenal.

I think the deslorelin solution will drastically reduce the risk of adrenal
disease and in this way a great discovery. In case of any new ferret that
will be adopted by me which is not spayed yet I will choose for the chemical
spaying, no doubt about it. So I'm very sorry to hear that the US is not
accepting this solution. I wondered if I could send the article of DR.
Schoemaker to the site of ferret-health and maybe it can contribute to get
the discussion going or speed up legal bureaucracy. I don't even know if
this article is maybe already available on the site.

Saluti, Anja.

Please, do not put any articles here without permission of
those who own them to avoid copyright violations.

The abstracts of many of Dr. Nico Schoemaker's articles
are available in the FHL Abstracts, and I think that we also
have a link to the directly University URL where his dissertation
can be read.

Having any of the articles themselves here would violate
international copyright laws and would be unfair to Dr.
Schoemaker. To have any of his articles here we would
need his permission -- which I could certainly request --
but we would also need the permission of any others
owning the articles: co-authors, the university for his
dissertation, the journals in which articles appeared. It
simply is not feasible, can not be done legally.

The delay in getting approval for the deslorelin implant
is governmental and that agency is aware of all of the research:
Dr. Schoemaker's Dr. Wagner's, and others. Such approvals
always take years in the U.S. and medical research is only
one thing considered, I'm afraid.

Besides going to the FHL Archives
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/
a person can go to
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez
and search under
Schoemaker ferret
for abstracts
and here is his dissertation in full:
