A thrombosis is a thrown clot that is in the blood stream. I have NEVER he=
ard of this with
adrenal surgery before. Never. Although rare in general in ferrets, it is=
most common
with heart disease, and also seen with some other things such as kidney dis=
ease or
lymphoma.
This ferret may have had more going on than was discovered before surgery. =
There could
have been hidden heart disease, failing kidneys (hard to spot), or a malign=
ancy.
A thrombosis can land pretty well anywhere. It can deprive one leg of bloo=
d flow if it
goes to the leg, two legs if it lands in a vascular divide and creates a "s=
addle" there. It can
kill an organ by preventing blood flow (in Chewie's case the liver, and in =
our Meltdown's
case a kidney), or it can look like stroke if it goes to the brain. Some b=
rain ones are
survivable and some are not. One of ours with heart disease could not surv=
ive hers
(which was her third thombosis), but another with kidney disease got throug=
h a clot to his
brain despite several days of being comatose (each day we drove him to our =
local hospital
and each night to the emergency hospital and then one very early morning th=
ey called and
said he was awake, and although he wound up with some difficulty using one =
leg he
coped and he never threw a second clot).
This is the sort of rare complication that no one could have predicted or h=
elped. I am
sorry that Chewie beat the odds in such a bad way.
When they occur in less critical locations like a leg then hours and hours =
of massage is
used and sometimes anticoagulants are used, but even for gentle anticoagula=
nts like tiny
bits of baby aspirin there can at times be life-threatening bleeding out as=
happened with
one of ours in the long past. I've often wondered if turmeric might be saf=
e enough for
use in ferrets whose heart disease is advanced enough to post this risk, bu=
t don't know
and it certainly would not want to be used in ones with insulinoma since it=
appears to be
able to drop blood sugar a bit.
Please, think of some things to do for yourself now, to help yourself heal.=
There is
nothing you or your vet could have done about this clot.=20

=A0 I believe thats
a fancy term for blood clot.=A0 If I'm right then the blood clot was preven=
ting the circulation
of blood through her liver.=A0 I could not find any info on this in the arc=
hives but other web
sites have mentioned what happens when this occurs.=A0 I don't think there =
was anything
that could be done to save her.

t knowledge out
there.=A0 Its improving, but still not enough.=A0 I know this topic has bee=
n brought up many
many times so I will not rattle on about it..=A0

by
Thursday.=A0 Thank you so much to everyone who has sent information and con=
dolences.=A0 I
appreciate you all very much.=A0 Hold your fuzzy ones close tonight.
