I was asked for some clarification on the above statement. Here
goes, Metacam is an NSAID like aspirin or Ibuprofen (just examples
that people might know about BUT WE NEVER USE IN FERRETS) and as most
people know these product can cause stomach upset and sometimes
GASTRIC ULCERS, sometimes these ulcers cause bleeding or hemorrage so
by giving food with them it helps protect the stomach a bit, not
always though. Pred can do the same thing. It is not an NSAID but a
steroid and the actions they exert are similar so that said it can
cause the same problem. These medications should not be given
together which is why I don't use Metacam really often in ferrets
because so many are already on pred for insulinoma and sometimes
IBD. Once or twice using together usu isnt a problem UNLESS the
ferret is super sensitive. However if you continue to give both at
the same time it can lead to serious problems. THIS statement is
true with all animals human to ferret. Aspirin can be given in some
but with caution and instruction but a vet. So I hope this helps
clarify. Just had the grand opening of my new clinic so I am tired
but wanted to try and clarify and I hope it came out alright.
