Subject: [ferrethealth] Baby: Hacking cough, very large liver
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I took Baby to the vet today for a hacking cough that has been only occasio=
nal for a few months (and he's been to the vet before for it, and had antib=
iotics), but worsened quite a bit over the weekend.=A0 The vet said it soun=
ded like he was trying to cough up a hairball.=A0
An x-ray showed that his liver is huge - covers his stomach on x-rays from =
both angles.=A0 Bloodwork shows very high liver enzymes (like 351, where no=
rmal is 221).=A0
He is being put on amoxi and metronidazole for a week, and then will be re-=
seen; vet thinks the liver might shrink enough to see whether something's g=
oing on with the stomach.=A0 Lungs are clear - this isn't respiratory.
Baby is just over 4 years old.=A0 He had a foreign body surgery last Decemb=
er, and then developed adhesions, for which we had to do another surgery.=
=A0 He was eating fairly well, and then I got a puppy in May, which he foun=
d pretty scary -- he quit eating & drinking on his own; I've kept him going=
at what the vet considers a good weight with Carnivore Care, and last week=
, he was really eating kibble and drinking on his own again.=A0 But since h=
e's been coughing more, I think he's been eating a little less.=A0
I am very concerned about the coughing.=A0 It could be fluid in the abdomen=
(like, from lymphoma), or . . . well, does anyone have any ideas?=A0 Do yo=
u think there's any way that he got more adhesions that are somehow making =
him cough?=A0 Could the liver just be so big that it's pressing on the stom=
ach and making it hard for him to eat?=A0
Thanks in advance
