To: <melodyparker@yahoo.com>
I work with rescue ferrets and estimating an age is very difficult. One
usually looks at the teeth but I know how arbitrary that is. My ferret
Goliath is partial to tartar and had it when he was very young. I let him be
treated for it already twice and now he's starting again, I'm pretty
desperate about it. (ever saw the bill for cleaning and pulling teeth?
Ouch!) My six and a half year old Lucy though has teeth like e puppy. When
the WWF found my Gorba in the woods he had a terrible fur with yellow
underfur, and we estimated him on 4/5 years old. Now that he's neutered and
fed well, he completely changed his fur, and he is a very lively and happy
ferret and another vet estimated him two years old. One wished that ferrets
had 'growrings' In their nailclippings, like in trees, so we could say
something about their age which is less arbitrary.

Beautiful Anja! We've been in the same position in both
directions, too, with one whose age was guesstimated
upward by the vet after what he saw in surgery that was
not apparent otherwise. -- Sukie]
