Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret food question...
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

hi everyone--

i posted about a month ago about one of my ferrets who dislocated her
elbow, and then was sedated and the next day could not go to the
bathroom...after about an hour of massaging her belly and giving her
ferret lax, she went and was back in the game! gosh was i relieved!
i was so scared! :( anyway, she is a little trouper i tell you!

one of my other ferrets began coughing what sounds like whooping (sp?)
cough in children yesterday, and it scared the life out of me! i
looked up some things on ferret health, and decided to give him
benadryl, and it worked like a charm...it seems like he only gets that
way after running around a lot and playing and so forth, so we are
thinking he possibly has an asthma problem...we will see...

MY REAL QUESTION HERE...we have been experimenting with food, and what
the best foods are to give to them without breaking the bank, as we
all know, they can be quite expensive little critters! :) does
anybody have any suggestions? we are currently using pretty pets
brand ferret food with 50% protein, and VERY LITTLE moisture or
carbs...i read that if they do not have carbs though, that it could
cause kidney problems later--is that true??? i know it would be a
problem in humans, so i was just wondering if anybody knew??? we were
thinking about making our own food for them as well, as we have 13
little fuzzies right now and they are very good eaters! ha some vets
suggest it, but we wanted the best recipes and so forth...any
suggestions on this subject would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks so
much! :)

[Moderator's note:
food preference discussions tend to get out of hand
and get a lot of complaintsso those who just want to
tell this poster what foods they prefer should write to
her directly, please.]
