From your description of his symptoms it would be wise to bite the
bullet and make that trip. I do know how terribly frustrating it is not
to have a ferret knowledgeable veterinarian within easy access.
When I first moved back to Nova Scotia I had to travel 3 hours one-way
to get to a ferret knowledgeable vet. One day, one of my ferrets was
terribly ill and I reached into the hammock she normally slept in,
quickly put her into the kennel and made the drive. When I arrived at
the vet I opened the kennel and realized to my horror I had grabbed her
companion instead. I literally burst into tears when I realized I had
left my sick baby at home. So back I went, drove the 3 hours to get
home, got the correct ferret and returned to the vet. I had spent 12
hours just driving back and forth that day. A few months later I moved
into the city to be closer to the vet. Now he is a 10 minute drive from
me.
My point is that in some areas there are few ferret knowledgeable and
experienced veterinarians, but they are worth their weight in gold and
every effort should be made to see one if there is anything out of the
ordinary wrong with a fuzzy.
