Hi Nicole,

My 2 year-old gib Cannoli had his right adrenal removed in July. Prior
to that he had blocked and was given a 100 mcg. injection of the
one-month Lupron Depot. It worked fairly quickly however, the effects
waned within 2 weeks. Turned out he was a fast metabolizer. Lupron
worked quickly but was out of his system as quickly. He was given
another one-month Lupron Depot injection at the 2 week point and again
he responded well but in 10 days needed a higher dose. And so it went
until he had the surgery.

Following his surgery it took 6 weeks before his aggressive behaviour
settled down. His hair never came back until I started him on oral
melatonin (1 mg. daily, 7-9 hours after sunrise) . He didn't get the
implant because my vet doesn't use it. In two weeks his hair started
coming in and his behaviour continued to improve. He now has the
thickest coat he's ever had. So even though he had the surgery, he is
much better with the additon of melatonin post-surgically. His
behaviour has entirely returned to normal and he's not had any
recurrence of urinary problems.

Every ferret is different and some, like my fuzzbutt needed higher doses
of the Lupron Depot more often. Discuss with your vet whether he may
need another dose, or a higher dose. I think its a matter of finding
what works best for the individual ferret.

Consider adding melatonin as well. Lots of good information in the
archives on the medical management of adrenal disease with a combination
of Lupron Depot and Melatonin.

I've never used the melatonin implants but have gotten excellent results
with the oral melatonin. The down side is that it needs to be given
every day and preferably 7-9 hours after sunrise. If that works with
your schedule might be worth trying if your vet agrees. And the implant
is always an option, and may fit better with your life style.

Tressie
