Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Overweight and starved ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Having worked in a pet store, I
know that there are a lot of knowlegdeable people working there and
they do care about the animals, though I realize it is not so in
every pet store.
That being said...I bought a DEW from a pet store, she was very
thin, the runt of the pack. When I brought her home, she ate and
ate to the point where I had to wipe her butt because her hind legs
were so chubby, she could not keep herself up high enough to stay
clean. She was 7 weeks when I got her. She is now almost 3. She
stayed fat for the summer, but the first winter, she slimmed down
and maintained 1 lb 6 ounces or so(until Aug, when she showed early
signs of adrenal). My theory was always that she had to fight for
her food and therefore overcompensated when I brought her home. She
still continues to hide food all over the house to this day. This
is the time of year where they tend to pack on weight, so maybe that
is what he is doing.
Failure to thrive is inadequate weight gain and growth, generally
associated with poor nutrition.
Working at the pet store, I had some HUGH, and I mean HUGH ferrets
come in... a friend bought them and all 3 are over 6 pounds and they
are altered....same litter and they are all healthy...maybe he is
going to be a big boy.
I would think that as long as he is healthy, active that everything
will balance out once he realizes he is in a permanent home and does
not have to worry about food.
Being someone who panics and rushes to the vet, I am trying to make
myself monitor the situation for a few weeks before deciding to go
to the vet, and that is what I would probably do in your situation,
as I did it with my little girl.
If you are the same wolfysluv that works with deaf ferrets...thanks
for all the wonderful info you have.

think he ran into trouble with all of the transports and at the
holding area before he came to the pet store.?
