Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: best way to make flagyl go down !!!!!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Flagyl is not easy to get down no matter how you do it. What I do, is
get your supplies ready first. I use a pill popper, you can get one
from your vet. It pops the pill down their throat without having to
taste it. Then I get a smaller sleep sack and put the ferret in it
with their arms inside and wrap the sack around his neck so he can't
wiggle out. I usually lay then on their back a little so it's easier
for me to work, and put them under my arm like a football. I get my
pill ready and load the pill popper. I pry open the ferrets mouth and
quickly put the popper in back as far as I can, then pop the pill
down his throat. Hopefully, if all goes well, your done. Be sure to
give something yummy afterwards.
If you don't make it, you will know it immediately, you will have a
ferret foaming blue foam from his mouth and flinging it around as far
as he can. Then you have to try to do it all again.
When I did it with my Drew, he didn't fight me and it usually went
smoothly, but with fizzle, it was always a fight.

I hope this helps you a little.

[Moderator's Note: we found a hands-on demo of how to
use a pill popper our first time to be essential, and the
vet insisted on teaching that way, so there is likely good
reason to have one hands-on time with a tech or vet for
at least some meds, though perhaps not for others.]
