To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi Allie,
My gib underwent adrenal surgery in July - right adrenal removed.
Before his surgery his belly and tail were completely bald and he had
thinning hair everywhere and he kept losing hair after the surgery until
I started him on daily oral melatonin. Now he has the thickest,
sleekest fur he's ever had!
I was also worried that maybe the left adrenal was affected as well
although it appeared normal during the surgery. I discussed with my
vet, and the vet we were consulting with about trying the oral melatonin
- both vets felt it wouldn't hurt him and so why not try it.
It took about 2 weeks on the melatonin before the hair started coming in
and probably another month before it came in on his belly. Of course
every ferret is different but worth talking to your vet about maybe
starting on the melatonin. I did not use the implant because my vet
does not carry it. But the oral melatonin certainly did work for my
little guy!
I acknowledge that he may one day need Lupron as well but for now the
surgery and melatonin appear to be working.
I am also in Canada and if you would like to email me privately, I can
give you the brand name of the oral liquid melatonin I am using. It is
a Canadian brand.
