Subject: [ferrethealth] Baby: update, request for diet suggestions
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Baby has been, until the past 4 hours, doing extremely well. He seems
to be very comfortable (he is getting tramadol for pain), and has even
thrown a tantrum in his cage to be let out to play. Unfortunately, he
really dislikes the Hill's L/D. I have tried it microwaved,
microwaved with a bit of water, heated by putting a syringe in a glass
of warm water, and heated by just adding warm water and giving it
through a syringe. He really dislikes the aftertaste, I think.
I let him out for a few minutes to walk around at 8 PM, for the sake
of keeping his spirits up, and he headed right for the kibble bowl. He
did eat a bit (at the moment, there is Sheppard & Greene in the bowl),
and I let him have some more in his cage. He seemed fine at 8 PM,
but by 11, he seemed dehyrdated and like he didn't feel so great (pain
meds wearing off, perhaps). I gave him 1/2 a serving of carnivore
care about 30 minutes after his nighttime meds, and he was thrilled to
have it. He's eating more kibble right now.
The idea with the Hill's is that it is lower protein, and non-animal
protein, so it is easier for the liver to handle, thus allowing the
liver to devote more energy to healing. It doesn't seem like I am
going to be able to get that into him, though. Do any of you have
suggestions on a kibble that would be a decent alternative? It is
important that it not have a bunch of additives, etc., obviously. Any
thoughts on how "bad" the carnivore care is for him with a damaged liver?
The Hill's is definitely out - I cannot keep trying to feed him
something that he dislikes so much when he is already on 6 meds
multiple times a day. Maybe the carnivore care is my best option -
and whatever kibble he'll consent to eat.
