Subject: [ferrethealth] Prednisolone dose too high for insulinoma?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My 6yo ferret Bella was diagnosed with insulinoma 2 weeks ago by
ultrasound after exhibiting symptoms on and off for two months (4mm
tumour found on the pancreas). I chose to treat with prednisolone as
I didn't want to put her through surgery at this stage. She was
prescribed 2.5mg prednisolone (via tablet form) once a day (although
I have been giving 1.25mg twice daily after reading previous posts).
This sounds like a huge dose compared to other posts. She is only
600-700g most times she has been weighed. I'm a pharmacist and in
humans, you maintain the lowest effective prednisolone dose once
symptoms are controlled. I rang the vet today and he said to wait 30
days before trialling a decrease in the dose, but I don't want her to
become tolerant to the high dose and then have nowhere to increase
the dose to when symptoms worsen. I'm concerned that he thinks he
gave me 1mg tablets (which provides a more ferret friendly dose), but
I have 5mg tablets here. Am I poisoning my little one?
Although, She has vastly improved since about two days after I
started the medication, no more spacing out, wobbling or drooling,
although she still sleeps more than her sister (but the younger one's
only 2yo). She always get the dose with some food or pet milk that
she loves. Does anyone have access to articles etc that have doses
set out so I could show the vet?
Thanks, Mackenzie
