Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: pred dose for IBD
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Starting high 2 or 3 times a day, and being
sure to give with food, plus being sure that
it is Prednisolone rather than Prednisone)
then lowering it to whatever controls for that
individual is what was done for our two. The
reasons for that approach are these:
1. With IBD sometimes the GI problems might
irritate the liver. Since the liver has to alter
Prednisone to Prednisolone for the body to use
it, it is better to just go with Prednisolone and
skip that liver processing step to get more
effect.
2. The reason for starting with the high dose
is to get that inflammation down and better
under control than a lower dose would.
then
3. When it is under control slowly wean back to
what controls the inflammation best. If the
dose gets too low with that you may need to
raise a bit more and then try lowering to a
different point afterward.

I do not know the reasons for the other approach
unless the ferret also has ulcers or how they
compare but can explain points for this approach.

If there are ulcers you know that Carafate needs
to be given on as close to an empty stomach as
possible and to give it separated in time from
any other meds, right? (Also there are a few meds
it can not be given with such as Digoxin.) The reasons
are these: Carafate settles into and over things and
forms something of a temporary "bandage" that
way. So, even not considering medical interactions
there is the chance of it coating medication particles
or food particles instead of settling into the ulcerated
sections of the stomach. Plus, if food is in the way it
might not even be able to reach those ulcerations.
