Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] pred dose for IBD
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

In treating Trinny (somewhere around 6 years of age, possibly older) for her IBD, we started out with a higher dose than we're currently using, and after about 2 weeks the vet said to cut it back to 0.4 ml once a day. We're using Prednisolone, 15 mg/ 5 ml strength. It's taken a while to find the 'right dosage' to keep Trinny doing well with her IBD, and I believe she's also early stage insulinoma, as she's had a BG reading of about 70 at her last two vet visits.
After some experimentation with slowly decreasing or increasing her prednisolone, and even trying to wean her off of it at one point, what I've settled on now is 0.15 ml, given twice daily. That's about 7 drops each time. I changed it from once daily to twice daily because of her suspected insulinoma, and that change has made a positive difference in both her energy level and her IBD, which is now under control about 90% of the time. She's maintaining good weight and her energy levels are much better than they were, but she's also been slowly developing some signs of extended Pred use, even though it's been less than a year. Her neck is getting thicker, and she has a couple of fatty cysts developing under her right front armpit. But neither seems to bother her at all.
Along with using Prednisolone, we've changed her diet to less kibble and more soup, making digestibility easier.
