Subject: [ferrethealth] Update on Felicity - hind leg paralysis
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Things are not going well with Felicity. I am scheduled to take her in
tomorrow to see perhaps if there is a chance of sampling some fluid
from the lymph node/fluid that may suggest she has lymphoma. Despite
now getting prednisolone twice daily (total 2 mg) and Baytril, she
has deteriorated such that although she eats, likes being stroked,
curls up when I hold her, washes her face after chicken, she cannot
move her tail at all- its completely flaccid, and she is now unable to
do anything other than scoot pulling herself by her front legs.
I saw the writing on the wall today when my house mate found her in
his bedroom, and she had soiled herself - which she has done the last
couple of days - I've been cleaning her twice daily.I have to attend a
conference next weekend where I'm giving a talk and have to leave
Friday morning and will not get back until Sunday afternoon. My
housemate is not looking forward to dealing with a hemiplegic ferret
(I have other animals too that he will have to take care of). I will
ask the veterinarian tomorrow for advice. The thing that I'm
conflicted about, is that right now, she's somewhat lethargic,
obviously still getting around, and I hate to do something too early.

I guess I just feel guilty that I'm depriving her of a last few days
if I have her euthanized before I leave town. I guess its an
ethical/personal problem. I'm hoping the veterinarian will concur, but
I doubt that its going to make me feel any better. I'd hate to be gone
and have my friend deal with a bad situation.
