To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Prednisone is processed by the liver to
create Prednisolone which is the form
the body uses.

Giving Prednisolone from scratch skips
that step. I have never read from a vet
that it is easier on the liver to just start
with Prednisolone, but instead that it
gives more effect since a compromised
liver will have trouble with the conversion.

What I have read is that ferrets have
fewer steroid complications than many
other species. Is it possible that your
vet is not familiar with ferrets?

I so see that in humans there are such
cautions:
http://www2.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100002901.html

I have not heard of such cautions for ferret
patients but hope that those who are experts
in this area may be able to add information.

Now, this says that the same caution exists for
ferrets, but to be honest I haven't been all
that impressed by the Doctors Foster and
Smith website for health info, having found
generalizations from other species before:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?c=9547&aid=2059

This does not show such a caution for ferrets:

Neither does this (which looks like it satisfies the
needs an FHL member wanted met for a meds list
online):

This vet reference also answers some recent IBD
questions:
ferrets.aspx.pdf>
It is by Dr. Jerry Murray.

A histologist wonders here if a liver change was from
long term Prednisolone use by a ferret:

So, those are what I can find as a NON-vet.
