Subject: [ferrethealth] crusty bloody tail
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
thought to use the experience of all of you to ask for some ideas
to solve the problem of my Ulisse's tail. he started to have a bloody
crusty tail one and a halfe year ago. the vet immediately thought of
a thinning of the skin as a result of an adrenal problem. in fact it
turned out that Ulisse had an enlarged left adrenal and it was
removed at the end of 2007. the problem of the tail didn't dissapear
though. a few months later it got so bad that I went again to my vet
with it. he tried first a week of antibiotics to rule out some kid of
infection. the problem was never resolved though. probably the other
adrenal was not producing the right amount of hormones and we started
treating him with an enantone injection every month. (I'm not sure
what enantone is in english, I live in Italy but I suppose it's a
kind of Lupron.) After reading the research of Nico Schoemaker in the
Netherlands we decided to place an implant of deslorelin. this now is
two months ago and nothing changed. I just gave a bath to ULisse and
in the process a lot of the big crusts on his tail came of and under
it there's a raw bloody skin and the poor thing was whimpering a lot,
obviously in pain.
I was thinking that maybe we are totally on the wrong track over
here. surely the hormone treatment would have done something for his
skin, especially as Ulisse has no other symptoms of adrenal, is
lively, eats well and doesn't loose his fur. (except at the end part
of his tail where the crusts are. ) the crusts are strangely enough
only on the upper part of his tail, the underside is clear and
healthy. on the rest of his body I do see some light superficial red
spots on his back of which I'm not even sure if they weren't caused
by playing 'rough' with his male companion.
Do you have any idea's what this could be, or is there someone with a
ferret with similar symptoms? before taking him to the vet again I
would like to hear your opinions.
