Subject: [ferrethealth] Heartworm Disease Prevention Protects Pets, Wallets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Rise in Mosquito Population Causes New Warning -The American Heartworm
Society strongly urges pet owners to continue year-round heartworm
prevention medication for their pets. It's important not to cut back
on preventatives as failing to administer them could cause harm to pets,
and could actually increase the financial burden if heartworm disease
treatment is needed.Read more at http://animpet.blogspot.com/

[Moderator's Note:
Speak with your vet on such a choice. In some areas
it will not make sense but for others it certainly will.
Your vet will consider factors such as the waxing and
waning of local mosquito populations, your ferrets'
living conditions (obviously there is increased risk of
exposure for animals who go out but risk remains
for indoor ferrets), and the heartworm prevalence in
your area. Notice that the Heartworm Society keeps
maps. The expanse of locations with heartworms
rapidly accelerated after Hurricane Katrina because
dogs and cats were relocated widely before rescuers
thought to begin heartworm testing. The maps was
already showing spread, but that increased it fast
enough that many people are unaware that the
situation has changed for the worse in their areas.

Heartworms in ferrets are discussed at length in the
FHL Archives with multiple resources including

It was one of the topics addressed by Dr. Sandra
Kudrak Mitchell in her recent highly informative
talk at the IFC Symposium.]
