Were x-ray and/or ultrasound done *after* masses were suspected? I
would think this the easiest, safest, way to confirm or rule out. If
done prior, however, results may not be trustworthy (with lymphoma
masses may not show until the disease is late stage even when the
ferret appears quite ill....this has been my experience with quite a
few). Simply, if these tests were done early on visible masses may not
have been present. If repeated now something may show.

If the vet were recommending bone marrow/blood transfusion following
aspirate/cytology I would assume something (cancer) was found?

Not necessarily. I've seen ferrets improve from near death with soup
feedings, fluids, etc. Ferrets with cancers can last for quite some
time with extra care. I had one girl make it 4 years with lymphoma and
several others up to one year. All soup fed, all gave me many scares,
all rallied more then once before finally succumbing.

I wouldn't be too quick to rush to surgery either.
