Subject: [ferrethealth] Right Adrenalectomy: Pros and cons?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Everyone,

I'd posted here before regarding my ferret Polaris (Original message
#8118). It had been 12 weeks since his original left adrenalectomy and
4 weeks since he got his melatonin implant. He's still not growing fur
and his prostate seems to be acting up again (leaking urine and yellow
discharge). We took him to the vet yesterday and our vet thinks it's
time to have Poley's right adrenal gland out. Our vet's opinion is
that Lupron will buy us some time and relief some of the prostate
symptoms, maybe even hair growth. But it's not curative and just
postponing the inevitable surgery. He also mentioned that there appear
to be evidence that prolonged used of Lupron might be correlated to
carcinoma in the adrenal gland.

We have Poley's surgery booked for next Wednesday (Dec 3). He's a
really hearty guy and he is a good surgical candidate. But after all,
it will only be about 15 weeks since his last surgery. Our vet is a
fantastic surgeon and he'd never lost a ferret to right adrenalectomy
(knock on wood). I just want to be sure we're making the right choice
for Poley and right now, I'm not a 100% sure. I'm looking to do more
research and read up on Lupron, weight out the pros and cons before we
go ahead with the surgery. Has anyone heard of the Lupron/ carcinoma
theory? Anyone got good, long lasting results with Lupron?

Thanks for sharing your experience with us and helping Poley and I to
make the right decision.

Allie
