Subject: [ferrethealth] Mixing pedialyte with other things
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had suggested erroneously to mix pedialtye into duck soup and
thankfully Katharine and Jocelyn posted to say this was not a good idea.

I called a pharmacist to find out what the underlying mechanism was and
he told me the reason one does not mix pedialyte with anything else is
that it affects its osmolality, which can cause a serious imbalance in
the body. Osmolality increases with dehydration and decreases with
overhydration.

Pedialtye on its own restores lost electrolytes but giving either too
much of it or too little, which happens when you mix it with something
else really throws the body's biochemistry off and may make things
worse. The body responds by pulling more stored fluid into the stomach
or gut thus dehydrating more - or flushing stored fluid out of the body
and expelling it making diarreah worse. Either way it dehydrates if
mixed with other things, especially sugar based fluids.

To avoid giving too much or too little best to check with vet to know
how much is correct to give.
