Water toxicity just doesn't see to fit to me. It is RARE and very hard to do. Water toxicity
happens when the electrolyte levels get too low and the water intake too high, especially
if an individual is given distilled water. Almost no
one gives distilled water. You didn't do that, right?
Replacing the electrolytes fixes it. The electrolytes
can be replaced orally or sub cu. In a pinch even
Gatorade can be used.

Now, if you mean that the water in your location was
bad -- contaminated -- for a while then taking in
nasty bacteria and the like can happen through water
just as through foods.

HAS THE FERRET BEEN AROUND MINK? In mink there
is a disease called "wet belly" which the last I read is
still of unknown cause.

ECE is a disease that mutated from a related mink
disease, and I'd hate to see another doing that. (As
Dr. Karen said at the Symposium in relation to the
mink prion disease which ferrets have been reported
getting on a very rare basis under close association
and special conditions, "keep your ferrets away from mink.")
