Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Dosage differences in prednisone and prednisolone
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

That's the dosage it says on the bottle haha. He's had insulinoma for
the past year at least. He was on 0.8 mL twice a day and then when he
had his adrenalectomy his insulinoma started getting really bad. My
vet wanted me to start him on the second medication, diazoxide, but we
decided to up his dose of prednisone instead and see how that went.
He's never had a crash or anything like that, he's always been very
active and everything considering what he's been through. But she
wanted to do that second medication because she said we were almost at
the maximum of the prednisone. So she talked to a someone who knows
more about ferrets (we don't have ferret vets in ND haha, but she
always finds out from someone who is a ferret vet if she doesn't know
something, which I appreciate) and they said it's risky but we can up
the dosage a little more. So we're not having any problems with the
prednisone, I just would rather have him on the prednisolone. Also,
when they did the adrenalectomy, they sent out a sample to biopsy and
the tumor was malignant. Now we don't know if the cancer spread
before they got the tumor out. His poop has been bad but I switched
his diet around and it's healthy looking again, so he doesn't have any
symptoms yet of the cancer so we're not worrying about that quite yet.
So I don't know if his insulinoma is advanced or not. I don't feel
like it is, but his glucose levels were really low, like it was 30 one
time. But with this dosage they've been good.
