Subject: [ferrethealth] reminder about some transmissible infections
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

There was a large raccoon with marked neurological symptoms outside
our condo building today.

Possible injury (but no blood). Canine distemper very likely. Rabies
possible. If rabies then at least it was the dumb form rather than
the aggressive form.

I guess that is a reminder to let people on the FHL know ASAP that CDV
(Canine Distemper Virus) can be gotten year 'round...

We are leaving our shoes outside for now. Even though the fatty
envelope on Canine Distemper lasts longer in the cold than in heat we
still prefer that precaution.

I feel so sorry for the raccoon. Having raised two raccoons for NY
State decades ago I know raccoons rather well and enjoy them as
beings. At least knowing raccoon noises permitted me to get the
raccoon out from under the bushes and that made the capture by Animal
Control less difficult, reducing the stress on what was obviously a
dying and suffering individual.

We realize that in some locations raccoon mass-den in Winter so if
this is CDV then there may be more such situations in our condo complex.

We're waiting for the return of an elderly neighbor to find out if
there was any close encounter in which case they will have to test for
rabies.

Remember that there are excellent reasons to vaccinate. Dr. Ruth
Heller gave a wonderful lecture on Mongo Memorial Canine Distemper
Titer study at the latest IFC Symposium last month, and you can get
details and forms here:
