Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: inulinoma and lupron
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Dr. Bob Wagner at U. Pitt has been doing a study
to see if fructosamine levels can be used as an
insulinoma marker and then if they change with
administration of Lupron. Unfortunately, there
don't appear so far to be particularly different
levels in ferrets with or without insulinoma, and
it is already known that insulin measurements
are also not useful on that score.
He thinks that Lupron might be useful for
insulinoma in conjunction with typical therapies,
but there doesn't appear to be a way to measure
to know for sure. He has personally observed
what appear to be improvements beyond what
was expected with the conventional approaches.
That is why we wanted a way to measure,
because Lupron MIGHT also help ferrets who
have insulinoma.
Some other vets don't think it may help, so
opinions are split and without a way to measure
there will be only opinions, I am afraid. Hopefully,
things turn around with this study, but it may be
that the important info from it may be a null result
for fructosamine measurement use in ferrets.
Keep fingers crossed.
Sorry for not following up. I don't think that Bob
will mind if I say this little bit since my personal
fun money this year went to finance those
measurements. (Better than "stuff" and some
years we can do this, though usually we can only
contribute portions like everyone else.)
There is probably no reason that Lupron would
hurt, though.
Now, Lupron HAS been useful for some ferrets
with diabetes (rare in ferrets) because sometimes
the steroid producing portion of the adrenal cortex
responds to adrenal disease and then that can cause
diabetes symptoms, so for them the Lupron reduces
that aggravating signal from the diseased adrenal(s).
And I hope that i got all of that right... It's been a
demanding day.
:-)
