In addition to both canine and feline distemper, raccoons can also be
carriers of the Aleutian Disease Virus (ADV).

Because of this, I made a conscious decision about 10 years ago that I
would no longer rehab raccoons in my wildlife volunteer work. Between
the possibility of ADV and also having an elderly ferret with a
suppressed immune system (cancer and undergoing chemo), who I no longer
vaccinated, I decided the risk wasn't worth it.

Sukie is right. If you have any contact with a raccoon in the wild,
whether it appears ill or not, take precautions against these
diseases. The risk is minimal but you don't want to take any chances.
