Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Pain management for bleeding ulcer??
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Karen & Katharine,
I share your concerns. He is scheduled to see my vet first thing Monday
morning.
Another person emailed me privately and suggested the possibility of
mouth ulcers as well, which I will also investigate.
Sampson was not x-rayed at the Emergency Clinic and quite frankly I'd
rather he be seen by a ferret knowledgeable vet as it is.
Problem with Metacam, while it is an excellent pain med - is that it can
exacerbate ulcers so my vet ruled it out as an option in this case. I
lowered the dose of Tramadol and at least he didn't throw it up.
However, not sure its doing anything for him at the lowered dose.
He is getting sulcrafate 30 - 40 minutes before the chicken baby food
duck soup. And I am feeding him every 4 hours round the clock at the
moment. He's eating even though he's grinding his teeth the entire time.
And I am not having to syringe feed him. He's not eating as much as he
normally would - still glad that I am not having to force the food. I
started him on the antibiotic ulcer protocol this evening because his
stools are no longer tarry or bloody. But he is still showing the pain
response. ... sigh...
Thank you for your thoughts and input!
Tressie
