Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Pain management for ulcer
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Tressie
It sounds like an x-ray of the bladder and
pelvis is needed to make sure there is no
bladder stone(s) involved in Sampson's pain.
I would give the Carafate 10 to 15 minutes before
feeding him and start the antibiotics too.
An antacid like Pepcid, Zantac, Tagamet, etc
may also help with the pain from an ulcer.
As for pain meds: Tramadol is safe to use.
Metacam is safe to use in ferrets but not a good
choice if they have an ulcer.
Torbugesic can also be used.
I would recommend having him rechecked to make sure
there is not more to it then just an ulcer.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
