Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Pain management for ulcer
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Quick update on Sampson. He survived the weekend although I barely
did. The Tramadol does help but he fights me all the way when I give
it and it needs to be repeated more often than we hoped. The clinic
is looking into ordering the injectible form for me.

X-rays were done this morning - no uroliths or foreign bodies.
Stomach and spleen were enlarged. Although not normal certainly not
uncommon findings in ferrets. Nothing else remarkable on the x-
rays. He had some scant blood in his urine. Peripheral lymph nodes
normal. No mouth ulcers or dental issues.

He is still having intermittent bloody (not tarry) stools. Stools
when not bloody are birdseed grainy and sloppy. By bloody I mean red
with frank blood not scantily streaked. He cries or whines whenever
defaecating, even when under the influence of the Tramadol. Parasites
ruled out because he has not been exposed to anything that could have
caused Giardia or Coccidia and has never had this problem in the past.

Grinding teeth is now confined to only when he eats or gets oral
meds, despite receiving sulcrafate/Tormadol. Only food is duck soup
(chicken baby food, A/D & Carnivore Care) Whining continues off and
on.

Currently receiving diazoxide 0.2 mL BID; Tramadol 0.5 mL QID; Biaxin
1.0 mL BID; Amoxicillin 0.5 mL BID; and Sulcrafate 0.3 mL 30 minutes
before every feeding.

We are now waiting for CBC and serum chemistry panel results.

At this stage my vet does not have a definitive diagnosis for the
bloody stools and chronic pain. We do know he has an ulcer with
probable Helicobacter involvement because the stool is no longer
tarry as the antibiotics are kicking in. However, ongoing pain and
intermittent bloody stools remain a worry.

Will post again when blood panel results in.
