Hi Rachael,

You mention 'meds' but do not say whether he is being treated for
insulinoma with prednisone/prednisolone or diazoxide??

When your ferret didn't eat for 3 days were you hand feeding him? Did
the vet give him Sub-Q hydration?

There could be all kinds of reasons he stopped eating. If he's lost
that much weight and is not eating on his own - you have to feed him! I
don't mean put a bowl in front of him but actually hand feed him. Let
him lick it off your fingers. And before you attempt syringe feeding
have your vet show you the proper way to do this or you risk aspiration
and pneumonia. His blood sugar may have plummeted because he's starving
rather than because he has insulinoma.

Key is to get him eating and make sure he stays hydrated! You need to
find out why he isn't eating in the first place.

Give him chicken baby food or Hills Prescription A/D or Carnivore Care -
any or all of those mixed with warm water to form a palatable soup.
SOUP not dry kibble, until he is well enough to eat on his own.

If he is insulinomic he needs high protein, easily digestable food,
every 4 hours and he needs to be on one of the medications for
insulinoma. No sugary or grain treats!

Insulinoma is one of the three commonest illnesses ferrets are prone to,
you will find lots of ferret people who have ferrets with insulinoma.
Check the FHL archives for information. Just enter 'insulinoma' and
you'll probably get hundreds of hits.
