Dr. Ruth, Thanks for posting this information. Although I am not
(yet) affected by this, it is always good to be prepared. Plus, I
frequently provide my vet with new things that get posted here.

I was doing some online research tonight, and did find something on
the Miami Ferret website that might be worth trying. There is an
article there that is actually a condensed version of an older
article from Ferrets Magazine, by Dr. Kemmerer-Cottrell. It is
talking about treatment of the original ECE, but she mentions that
she uses Alpha Interferon as part of her protocol. The following is
a quote from the article:

>Alpha Interferon is one of the very few antiviral drugs in
>existence. Although there have been no studies to demonstrate its
>effectiveness against ECE, Dr. Kemmerer has been using Alpha
>Interferon because it may have some efficacy against this virus.
>Dr. Kemmerer's experiences provide some anectodotal evidence that it
>may shorten the course and lessen the severity of the disease.

The condensed article can be viewed online at:
http://miamiferret.org/fhc/ece_protocol.htm

The original article appeared in the Sept./Oct. 2001 Ferrets Magazine.

I am posting this information for anyone who is currently battling
this possible new strain of ECE. It might be worth discussing the
possible use of Alpha Interferon with your vet, and trying it. It
breaks my heart to hear that people are losing so many of there
furkids at once.
