Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Treatments for New Strain of ECE
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I had alerted my vet when I saw this information come in, in case it
might be something to look for with my foster who last weekend was
very ill with bloody diarreah and also black tarry stools with frank
blood. He is much, much better after pretty heavy care, plus
Sulcrafate, Biaxin and Amoxicillin and Tramadol for pain.

We had sent off stool samples, plus serum chemistry analysis and
CBC. X-rays had shown enlarged spleen and stomach only. Other tests
came back and showed anemia. Nothing else. We still don't know what
he had but thankfully does appear to be on the mend and none of the
others have gotten whatever he had.

I had been keeping my vet updated as posts came in on the FHL about
this lethal strain of ECE. He is an Exotics Specialist (we have them
in Canada). I know we aren't allowed to use vet's names but I did
want to post a couple of comments he had made, in case it might be
helpful:

"The swelling is worrisome. Probably indicates they are losing
protein via intestines. Do they say what happens to albumin in these
ferrets?

May not be a bad idea to add colloids to the fluids. It is a large
molecule that will keep fluids into blood vessels and maintain good
perfusion and blood pressure. Not a direct treatment of course, but
every thing helps." quote Dr.
