Subject: ECE comments Re: [ferrethealth] Digest Number 1375
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have privately heard of some cases in more than one
household in November and possibly October.

The people whose ferrets fit the description thought
they were dealing with something that would not pose
any risk to the ferrets of others.

The important thing is to concentrate on learning for the
sake of saving ferrets and avoiding finger pointing.

A great many thanks to Dr. Ruth for making this public
because doing so, which allows people to react in a logical
and informed fashion, has the potential to save so very,
very, very many ferrets.

Just a few of the important things not known yet:

It is not yet known if this is a disease that is carried by direct
contact, if it is airborne, if it is carried in waste, if it can be
carried on clothing, bedding, or caging.

People do not know if there are silent carriers as there can be
with kits who have ECE.

Also, it is not yet known how long before symptoms a ferret
may be contagious, nor how long after symptoms disappear
that the ferret may still cause illness in others. Remember
that in ECE a ferret can infect other ferrets for 8 months afterward,
and people can carry it on clothing and shoes.

**** I think it would be important for those who know more about
reducing disease risk from clothing, shoes, bedding, etc. to post
now, please, and teach us all. Many thanks! *****
