We took in several,and they are all faring well. We quarantined them
for a couple weeks, and all was OK.
WHENEVER one comes in, there`s a risk that they COULD be carrying ECE-
-but we have been lucky since Merry died. I do believe she was our
carrier. We have not seen ECE here for several years----and never
once, did we lose any to ECE before. Some were pretty ill & required
supportive care, but they all made it.
Based on what I`m reading, and what we`re finding--nearly half of all
ferrets plagued with this strain will die. This is no ordinary ECE.
A shelter adopting out an apparently healthy animal could
theoretically now wipe out half of the ferret population in that
animal`s new home.
A sanctuary could unwittingly endanger a newcomer if the virus is
lurking in that room.
We`re not sure how it`s spread. We`re not sure of the incubation
period. We`re not sure what is the most effective treatment.
Now, more than ever, we need to work together, report new cases, and
share what may be working for us.
This is not the time to panic---It is a time to cooperate, support
one another, and search for the answer...
As for new intakes--this is a heavy judgement call.
