Subject: [ferrethealth] Probable Outbreak in Arizona this Summer Re: Lethal, Hot Strain of ECE
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This ws sent to me privately, but I do have permission to forward (and this
post may be forwarded). This is regarding an outbreak of illness in Arizona
this summer, which sounds very similar to what we are seeing here. Six of the
ferrets in the house became ill, five of them died.

If this is indeed the same variant of ECE (note it is still NOT confirmed to
be ECE - I will post when I get the results), then it has been around and it
just wasn't being recognized as a new variant. Note that this person thought
that she had somehow gotten poison in her household, although she couldn't
figure out how. I have to wonder how many cases were attributed to other things.

I still have no idea where the exposure came from for my household, though.

I have heard of possible cases in eastern PA now as well.

On a slightly brighter note, although we have lost two more since my initial
post to the FHL, and one more has become ill, the five currently ill are
hanging in there, and one that was doing very badly may have started to improve
since starting on Tamiflu and omeprazole in addition to the other meds she's been
on.

Since I had had the ECE virus, that is the approach I used. Duck soup, baby
food, and electrolytes feeding every 4 hours, but it didn't stop. Poop stayed
dark brown, then turned bloody. None was slimy. Also the time frame was late
July early August. No vomiting just sick to stomachs. There didn't seem to be
an incubation time. One got sick, then it was like wild fire. Like I said after
the initial attack, it just seem to disappear. Chic is the one that made it
through. She is an older ferret 8yrs. She also the only one of my ferrets that
had ECE when that went through my business years back . I do not take my
ferrets out. They are not in contact with other ferrets, unless I take in a rescue.
I did do one shot clinic before this happened and didn't change my clothes.
As you can see I have been beating myself up. I did strip both rooms out and
the cages and bleached the walls, bedding, etc. twice. I have since taken in
two hospice ferrets and all is fine. Hope this helps. I know this seems weird,
but I feel better, I thought I had poison them and didn't tell XXXXX of XXXX
Shelter until after I had lost 4. When she came over and looked at Baby, her
first thought was ECE also, but the poop was all wrong and so was the smell. He
had gotten sick that morning, she came over in the evening and he passed that
night. Hope this helps.. Thanks for replying and tell everyone I am praying
for them and I feel for anyone that this has happened to.
