Subject: [ferrethealth] Probable Outbreak in Arizona this Summer Re: Lethal, Hot Strain of ECE
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Reminder to people:

There are a lot of types of illnesses with intestinal symptoms, but
the one under discussion is different from the majority. It is not
a mild illness, it is not an illness which takes its time, it is not an
illness which hits just a few ferrets, it is not an illness with mild
dehydration. The level of dehydration is so extreme that some
are getting 200 ccs of fluid daily. When Hilbert had hydronephrosis
we had to get at least 150 ccs of fluid into him, and it is not easily
done. Your typical sub-cu injection is about 1/10th of the fluid
levels being talked about here. YES, some individuals seem to be
less hit. Perhaps they had previously had the normal version of ECE
and as a result had antibodies? Still, take a careful look at the
symptoms of the rest, please, before straying too far from the
description.

Please, see the description. This disease can cause death as rapidly
as within 8 hours. The infection rate is high and rapid. A large
number of the ferrets die despite all measures by veterinary
professionals. Read and re-read the description carefully.

Also, a few of the ferrets have had some green diarrhea, but it is
not the "green slime" that is characteristic of classic ECE.
...

Symptoms are:

-from happy, healthy, bouncy ferret to cold/flat/extremely dehydrated ferret
with or without bloody diarrhea in the span of less than eight hours

-it is extremely difficult to rehydrate these ferrets - some of them have
been getting 200 or more cc of fluids per day

-some of them will eat on their own, others will not

-copious diarrhea, liquid, progressing to bloody

-NO vomiting

-the diarrhea is NOT green

-death can be as rapid as eight hours after first onset of clinical signs

-some ferrets have broken with a bit of diarrhea, but have not shown the
other signs and have recovered uneventfully
