Subject: [ferrethealth] New ECE strain?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Reading more about others' experience with this disease I will share my
own experience with illness recently. I wonder if this is perhaps some
other virus passed between ferrets and people. We had a ferret picnic on
Saturday, November 22. (It is only cooling down here in Tucson by this
time.) No, nothing at the picnic was the cause, no potato salad or such.
Next day I wasn't feeling well, and was starting to have constant
diarrhea. There was a slight fever, no vomiting until a few days later.
Other symptoms were very like has been described for the ferrets.
Complete lethargy, dehydration, wanting to eat but couldn't. I finally
drank some Ensure stuff I had around, forced water and whatever. My
neighbors and others had it too, but the younger ones had only vomiting.
I had heard from others that had similar symptoms as mine. It took over
a week to to finally get back to normal and longer to get my strength
back. I tried looking up what this may have been and the best I can
conclude is that it was a norovirus which has about 75 variants. It
seemed to be different in each person who got sick.
My ferrets were mostly alright except for one male who was already weak.
He had such dehydration that in spite of sub-q twice a day and feedings
he went downhill fast and I did have him euthanized. All others have
been ok since then although some have loose soft stools but not diarrhea.
