Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Intestinal Lymphoma and yellow mucus diarrhea
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Stephanie,
I had a ferret Odie who just passed last week with the same thing. Last
October a year ago he began having soft, seedy stool and slight weight loss. We
took him to the vet, based on clinical exam, enlarged lymph nodes in abdomen and
thickened intestines she felt he had either lympho or inflammatory bowel
disease. She said you need a biopsy to make absolute diagnosis .He was put on
Pred, and also he took the Amoxi, pepto, flagyl combo usually used for ulcer. The
diarrhea improved. We found the diarrhea came back after being off the
antibiotics. We took him to another vet who sees a lot of ferrets and she put him
on Biaxin, amoxi and I think it was Prevacid she had compounded.
The diarrhea kept coming back. He was then put on Clavamox, 1/4 of a 62.5
mg pill ground up into ferretvite, twice daily. I would try to cut back to
once a day,if the softpoops came back I put him on twice a day.He took the
clavamox daily for close to a year before it stopped working. I asked about
Imuran but the vet wouldn't use it unless we had a biopsy and I didn't want to put
him through that.He really started having liquid stools and we tried to stop
it with Immodium, kaolin pectin,a little canned pumkin, pepto and nothing
helped. He was getting sub q fluid daily. We had tried to change his food in the
past, but he wouldn't eat anything new.We noticed he liked turkey on
thanksgiving, so I went out and got turkey cutlets cooked and ground them up..We also
found purina one adult sensitive systems, made of turkey so I made him soup
out of that. Since his legs were weak,he didn't go over to the food bowls
anymore,so I could control what he ate. I also called a shelter mom and she told
me to put about 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of benefiber into his food. I only did
this for 2 days and it helped. I also gave him Uncle Jims duck soup mix by
Marshalls, even though it has some chicken
Finally about a week before he died his stool finally was firming up and I
was hoping he would gain strength back. Then late saturday night he didn't want
to be fed, clenched his jaws and his eyes look dim. I took him to be with
me. I never fell asleep, so I know he just quietly stopped breathing. He never
made any funny sounds or breathing. I was relieved he seemed to have a
peacful death and that just a few hours earlier he was eager to eat, but then I
think he knew it was time to go. I have heard from others on the FHL that they
had a ferret who took long term antibiotics for diarrhe, thats actually where
I got the idea and talked to the vet about it.
Good luck,
Debbie
